So, the big topic.. How does mental health affect Music Producers? I was diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder in 2018 after 2 admissions to psychiatric wards. My first experience with mental health was in 2014 with my first episode with Psychosis, I was working 18 hour days, I had 4/5 jobs including working in a professional studio, working in a cafe, doing session work and working in a pub, This is not healthy! After being stressed out constantly, I smoked some Marijuana (maybe 2 or 3 times) and this triggered an episode.
Luckily, I have now recovered, but the process took a lot of work, listening to doctors, trying different medication and changing my routine. As a Music Producer, you can be very isolated, looking at a computer for most of the day so I try to make regular walks around where I live, chat to family & friends daily and keep in contact with my mental health team. If you are struggling I would highly recommend contacting these contacts:
Your Local GP - Can be found in your local area Help Musicians - 0808 802 8008 - Mental health line specifically for musicians who work in the industry. Samaritans - 116 123 - Great if your having suicidal thoughts or struggling
These are all free to call and great for finding support quickly.
Some practices that have really helped me in the past:
Meditation - helps calm the mind and get another perspective Youper App - a free AI CBT therapy app iCal Apple Calendar - Planning your meals, sleep times and work can really get yourself get into a healthy routine
